County Sweetens Homebuyer Assistance Program

“So, how do you like being a homeowner?” my dad asked during a recent visit to Pottstown.

In addition to celebrating his 72nd birthday, we attempted to tackle a crawlspace insulation project under my kitchen (Update:  What I thought was DIY will likely require hiring a professional).

Back to answering his question, I love owning my first place after 20-plus years of renting. From my backyard vegetable garden to finally planting roots in one community, it’s been a great first year. Knowing that my mortgage payment is stable for the near-term is a dramatic change for the better after watching my rent increase roughly 40 percent over the last 10 years. I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to purchase a home through the Mosaic Community Land Trust last September (detailed in a previous post). I benefitted from downpayment and closing costs assistance ($10,000) from Montgomery County.

That program recently expanded to up to $40,000 for those who income qualify, which is why Montco 30% partnered with the county’s Office of Housing and Community Development to spread the word!  We held three information sessions: one recorded virtual meeting, one in Lansdale, and one in Norristown. Relatedly, Rep. Joe Ciresi’s office (where I work full-time) held a similar event in Pottstown to offer folks information on homebuyer assistance.

Montgomery County is a wonderful place to call home. We have vibrant Main Streets, spacious parks and beautiful trails, top-notch schools, and a diverse array of businesses. I believe we are at our best when we help make the cost of safe, decent, and comfortable housing attainable for all walks of life.

Please help spread the word about homebuyers’ assistance programs right here in our backyard.

The Vibe Cafe in Pottstown hosted this event highlighting non-profits and government programs that assist new homebuyers.
